Chapter Fourteen

Royal

I was finishing up my last class for the day when a text from Pharaoh came through.

Baby daddy

It’s the weekend and I wanna take Paige. I don’t want to hear no for an answer just bring her over to the crib.

I haven’t talked to his ass in over a week and the first type of communication I get from him is to bring Paige over. I sent him a text telling him I would be over there with her within the hour. While I was walking up to my car I felt someone walk up behind me, but before I could react their fingers were over my eyes.

“Where you going lil mama, I thought you were going to wait for me after class?” The familiar voice said.

I spun around to see Riq standing there with a cocky grin on his face. That night I spent at his mom’s house we really got to know each other. Riq was 19 and trying to get it by any means necessary. He wasn’t struggling for money because his mom was an RN, but he felt like he was less of a man because he couldn’t take care of her the way his father did. His father was heavy in the streets when Riq was a kid, but the streets caught up to him when he got killed in a drug deal gone bad. Riq ended up turning to the street life to carry on his father’s legacy to provide for his mother. The only reason he went to school was because his mother wanted him to at least get his bachelor’s degree. He agreed and was working overtime to get that degree.

“I forgot all about that. Blame it on my unborn child,” I giggled, rubbing my stomach.

“You don’t even look like you’re pregnant. You sure there is a baby in there?” he said, examining my stomach.

“Boy stop, I’m sure there is a baby in there. My doctor told me I’m carrying well and I should start showing soon.” I smiled. Thinking about my child always brought a smile to my face.

“Oh ‘ight, just making sure. I don’t want to be in the friend zone for nothing.”

“What are you talking about, friend zone?”

“You got me in the friend zone. We hang out all the time and talk to each other on a daily basis but we won’t ever be anything more than friends.”

“Riq I already told you that if we met at a different time then maybe there could have been something between us. But right now the timing is off. I’m still caught up with Pharaoh. I don’t want to lead you on or anything but this is how I feel. I like having you around and I enjoy our new found friendship, but that’s all this is going to be right now.”

“You don’t have to explain yourself lil mama. I told you I’m willing to be whatever you need at the moment. I’m not going to lie, at first I was trying to kick it to you.
